Timber has a fine texture, sometimes with stripes and is rather “oily” looking. It emits a clean, fresh scent unlike any other wood. The heartwood is olive brown, sometimes dark brown, often with striping. The wood contains extracts, which are used in the chemical industry.
Palo Santo is extremely heavy and durable,: "Heartwood is very durable under exposure and will last indefinitely in the ground." [US Forest Service 2002]
